Started my OB rotation...

Finally had my first REAL OB rotation (not stinky skills lab) yesterday.  All in all it was alright.  I was really looking forward to it because so many of my other friends really loved it, but alas, I guess I just thought it was ok.  Now that's not to say that I disliked it, I could see myself working on that floor no problem, BUT I didn't fall in love with it like some of my friends have.  I didn't hear the angels singing when I walked through the door :)  Of course, that was just L & D.  I haven't done nursery or postpartum yet, so we'll see.  Maybe I will like those better.  If not there's always the rotations next semester.

I'm kind of starting to get a little worried.  What if I don't fall in love with any of these areas?  What do I do then?  Maybe it's ok to just "like" what I do.  But honestly, after spending all of this time & money, I'd really like to LOVE what I'm doing.  Is that too much to ask?  Also I'm thinking that maybe I'm just viewing this wrong.  I mean when it comes down to it I'm really only seeing this through a spectator's eyes.  Maybe it will be different when I'm the one actually getting to do the job and not just watching.  I hope so.  So far I have seen many different areas of nursing where I could potentially work but none that have just grabbed me by the heart.

Anyhoo, that's one clinical day down & 2 to go.  I am very much looking forward to my nursery day though, I can't wait to hold me some babies!! :)  Today our groups presented our OB project (thank God that's done) & this weekend I will be working on my Med/Surg paper (which is due Monday I might add).

All in all things are going pretty good & I'm just looking forward to counting the days down until this semester is DONE!!

  2. Don't worry, for some people the angels just don't sing. And that's okay! You will be a great nurse wherever you chose because there's no mistaking that you care! Whichever direction you start getting pulled, just be patient. Don't jump into any one area until you know that you could go to work with interest and without anxiety. If you can get to that point, I'm sure you're where you were meant to be.
PS did you get to see a vaginal or c/s birth yet?

    1. Yes I saw 2 vaginal births and one section while I was there that day. I've seen vaginal births before, but that was my first section. Pretty interesting.

  3. maybe you'd be best starting on a med / surg floor just to get your skills fine tuned and see what types of patients you like...you don't have to stay in it forever ~ nor do you need to have a perfect plan at this time in your schooling. I knew I always loved L&D but I did med /surg for 5 years prior to changing....it really made me a much better nurse. And the best thing is that there are so many choices in nursing and you can move around throughout your career.
    Just enjoy the journey :)

    1. I feel like my place is going to be PEDS. I've thought that from the beginning, but we'll see. I guess b/c so many of my friends LOVED L&D I just thought I would too, but alas it wasn't love at first site. Like you said though, there's plenty of places to work & get different experiences if I don't find that certain thing that just calls out to me. Thanks :)

I'm still alive!! Tomorrow is the NCLEX!

So as you can see I have GRADUATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woohoo!!  I am SO happy that nursing school is over, but can we say holy terrified?  Tomorrow is the NCLEX & I feel thoroughly unprepared.  Fortunately our school provided us with the HURST Review  and even though I have been studying this for about 2 weeks now I still feel completely terrified to actually take the test.  Of my former classmates I know of one so far who has failed....so scary... The rest of them are chugging along & passing on a daily basis, hopefully I will be one of them! But to rewind, here are a few pics from graduation & my graduation party that my precious husband & sister threw for me: That's my baby girl to my right, she looks taller than me!   I seriously couldn't have been cheesing any harder!! My nursing bestie & his bf hiding in the back! My study buddy!   My inlaws, aren't they precious!! Definitely one of the best days of my life!

I feel so inadequate...

So today I was reading Sophia's blog over at All Things NP , she's a NP student at Penn State.  As I was reading about her interview process with Penn State & her rotations & her Sim Man day I started thinking, I am nowhere NEAR as smart as she is.  I still struggle with what lab values are correct, much less IF they're off then why??!!  I know that I don't put in as much time studying as some of my other classmates do and all of this makes me really doubt myself.  When will this stuff start to really click? When will I start to KNOW this stuff?  I wish I could spend more time studying than I do & in all honesty I probably could, but I also have a very busy life.  I know that's not an excuse as everyone has their own "stuff", but I was seriously thinking as I was reading over her blog that I really need to buckle down & start reading a bit more.  I definitely need to start studying more.  I mean, I'm doing fine in my classes but PERSON

MedSurg - Ortho Floor....

Ok can we say TOTAL snooze fest???  Today was our first official day on the MedSurg floor, but unfortunately since the professor figured we might be overwhelmed with over 15 pages of clinical paperwork due in one night, we weren't really able to do much (meaning no passing of meds).  We were basically put into the PCT roles.  So, pretty much it felt like last semester's clinical all over again, a bunch of elderly people, except for these ones have total hip replacements instead of just being old.   And let me tell you I can say with almost 100% assurance that working on the Ortho wing of the MedSurg floor is NOT where I see my future nursing self.  I mean maybe it was just my perception, but I saw the nurses basically in the same role as they were in the nursing home.  Going from patint room to patient room passing meds.  BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I hate that we don't get an ER rotation, I REALLY think that I would like that much more, except that as a new nurse I just don'
